LEADING BUSINESSES. LEADING COMMUNITIES.

March 23, 2015

The Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to open the application process for our seventh program year of Junior Leadership Southside.  Junior Leadership Southside is an eight month program that provides leadership orientation and development to local high school students.  The program is open to rising juniors and seniors.  The program includes monthly sessions ranging from three to five hours in length and held on school holidays, after school, and on Saturdays.

The program will begin with an orientation in September 2015 and will end with a graduation ceremony in April 2016.  Monthly sessions will include speakers and panelists providing a holistic approach to leadership orientation and development.  Participants will be selected based on the quality of their applications.  Applications are due on May 20, 2015.  A tuition fee of $195 will be used to defray the expense of monthly sessions.  Limited financial assistance may be available upon request.

After the first year of Junior Leadership Southside, Averett University announced that it would award a $5,000 renewable scholarship to every high school student who completes the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce’s Junior Leadership Southside Program and attends Averett University. The scholarship can be utilized for up to four years for a total award of $20,000. “We want to recognize these students’ accomplishments and to make it possible for these emerging leaders to remain here in our region,” said Averett President Dr. Tiffany Franks. “These students represent some of our area’s best and brightest talents. They are our future leaders.” Franks notes that scholarship recipients will continue their training at Averett through a comprehensive leadership development program available to all students. “Averett will be a great fit for Junior Leadership graduates who wish to continue to hone their leadership skills through Averett’s chapter of the National Society for Leadership and Success, by leading student clubs and organizations, and by participating in the University’s annual leadership conference.”

Junior Leadership Southside is made possible by a grant from the J.T. Minnie Maude Charitable Trust, our Chamber sponsors, and an anonymous donor.  We are deeply grateful for their generosity and commitment to the youth of Danville and Pittsylvania County.
