Breakfast meeting to spotlight Goodyear

The Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce will host a breakfast meeting on “Goodyear: Celebrating 50 Years in Danville” on Friday, November 18.

The breakfast will feature Greg Kerr, Plant Manager of Goodyear’s Danville plant. Kerr will share information about Goodyear’s 50-year history in this region and discuss the future of the plant. The breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m. at The Institute for Advanced Learning & Research (150 Slayton Avenue, Danville).

Goodyear selected a site in Danville for its 10th tire plant in late 1965.  On December 15, 1965 groundbreaking ceremonies were held at the Danville plant site.  The Goodyear flag was planted, and Goodyear Executive Vice President Sam DuPree set off a charge of dynamite to blow off the top of a hill on the plant site.  In the following 10 weeks, about three million cubic yards of dirt were moved, more than three miles of roadroad built, a fourth of the plant’s property was cleared and leveled, and a half mile of road was graded.

Construction started on the 540,475 square foot facility on March 10, 1966, making it Goodyear’s largest single-unit plant built to date. On November 25, 1966 – just over 11 months after the groundbreaking – the Danville plant cured its first 900 x 20 truck tire.

Today, the Goodyear-Danville plant produces radial truck tires, bias aircraft tires, and radial aircraft tires. The facility has grown to nearly 50 acres under one roof.  Since the first tire was cured in 1966, Goodyear-Danville has cured more than 100 million truck and aircraft tires for the world market.

Goodyear is Danville’s largest employer.

The breakfast meeting, which is open to the public, costs $20 for Chamber members and $25 for non-members. The cost includes a buffet breakfast with healthy food choices.

Reservations are required and should be made by calling the Chamber at (434) 836-6990, by emailing the Chamber at chamber@dpchamber.org, or by registering online at www.dpchamber.org.
