Averett University Announces Scholarships/Application Deadline Extended
Averett University announced today that it will award a $5,000 renewable scholarship to every high school student who completes the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce's Junior Leadership Southside Program and attends Averett University. The scholarship can be utilized for up to four years for a total award of $20,000 and will be available to Junior Leadership Southside graduates beginning with the 2010-2011 class.
"We want to recognize these students' accomplishments and to make it possible for these emerging leaders to remain here in our region," said Averett President Dr. Tiffany Franks. "These students represent some of our area's best and brightest talents. They are our future leaders. We are pleased to be able to offer these students Averett scholarships and the opportunity to experience the benefits of an Averett education."
Franks notes that scholarship recipients will continue their leadership training at Averett by taking leadership roles in student-led organizations.
"Leadership program graduates will continue to develop their leadership skills at Averett and be well-prepared for leadership positions once they graduate," Franks said. "We encourage all of our students to gains hands-on experience along with their classroom study. Averett will be a great fit for Junior Leadership graduates who wish to continue to hone their leadership skills."
The Junior Leadership Southside Program, which began in 2009, is an eight-month program providing leadership orientation and development to local high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. The program includes monthly sessions ranging from three to six hours in length and held on school holidays, after school and on Saturdays. These monthly sessions are held at local businesses, and participants are exposed to leadership development activities and opportunities in the Southside Region.

Mission
Our mission is to give Danville and Pittsylvania County high school students that have the propensity and desire to be active citizens in the community exposure to opportunities available to become engaged community leaders. Also, we desire to stimulate an interest and desire in community involvement, as well as cultivate leadership skills among youth through personal and group interactions.
Vision
Our vision is it to develop lifelong leadership skills among Danville and Pittsylvania County high school students that inspire them to become actively involved in their community, as well as to educate and retain young professionals to aid in the economic development of Danville and Pittsylvania County.
Program
Junior Leadership Southside is an eight (8) month program that will provide leadership orientation and development to local rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The program will include eight (8) monthly programs ranging from 4-8 hours in length held on school holidays, after school, and on Saturdays.
Participants
Each class will include approximately twenty (20) rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors in Danville and Pittsylvania County schools. These participants will be selected based on applications and references submitted.
Attendance and Commitment
Due to the time requirement of participation in this program, participants and parents commitment is critical for program success. Participants are allowed only two (2) absences during the program year. Any participant that fails to attend at least six (6) of the eight (8) monthly sessions will not be allowed to graduate in April. Transportation to and from the program locations will be the responsibility of the participant.
Tuition
A tuition of $195 is used to defray the expenses of monthly sessions. It may be paid by the participant or by a sponsor. Limited financial assistance may be available upon request.

Junior Leadership Southside participants have been participating in sessions on team building, leadership skills, and customer service.
At right, Patrick Jinks, President & CEO of United Way of Danville-Pittsylvania County, met with participants in the Junior Leadership Southside program in February to facilitate a discussion around vision, mission, and core values. During Jinks’ presentation, the participants were challenged to develop a mission statement for their lives and to illustrate it.
